Lonni Wong is a Berlin based ceramic artist, born in Hamburg, Germany.
As a German of Chinese origin, her artistic journey began as a second-generation migrant, when her parents immigrated from Hong Kong.

She obtained a diploma degree in scenography at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hanover.
Her study at the Hiroshima City University of Art had the most and strongest influence to her art practice today. Lonni develops a special interest in issues of a self and togetherness as a coexisting connection.

Since 2019 Lonni has become self-taught in ceramic arts. She creates both “sculpted objects” and “functional ware,” that take a closer look at their purposes. Her objects are handbuild or wheel thrown and altered, cut out, carved or sculpted from a larger block. Her works are often created in pairs or cluster-like constructions. The process of exposing layers of colors or self-mixed glazes seem to create a biomorphic, living body.

About

My work examines the question of how we are all connected, in particular connections that are mutually dependent. I am fascinated by the common ground of a coexistence of two opposing forces or qualities.

I question the interweaving between the familiar and the seemingly foreign, which results in ceramic sculptures as an interplay between form, texture and color.

I am inspired by the amazing world of seeds, bacteria and biomorphic stages that are constantly evolving and fascinated by their natural, intelligent communication. Like in their world, I seek a kind of origin on unknown territory where individuals undergo profound transformations and cross physical and psychological boundaries. I approach this juxtaposition by emphasizing growth and decay, order and chaos.

My objects often appear cluster-like, in pairs or similar to a cell division. I want my objects to look like they could have lived or grown somewhere. This effect is achieved by exposing layers of color and giving them a biomorphic texture. I mix my own glaze to create a unique volcanic, lichen or metallic shiny surface, that imitates a narrative alien organic surface.
